Dino Zoff: "Sinner's victory at Wimbledon is like ours at the 1982 World Cup."

Dino Zoff is a legend of Italian sport. Captain of the 1982 World Cup-winning national team, he's also a passionate fan of the Azzurri. At 83, he follows everything from swimming to soccer and even tennis. He followed the Wimbledon final , glued to the TV to watch Jannik Sinner versus Carlos Alcaraz : "I didn't lose a point. I really enjoyed it," says the former goalkeeper, whose life is currently being covered in a documentary directed by Giovanni Filippetto.

Zoff, what kind of victory was Sinner's in London ? "A truly deserved triumph. It's right now to acclaim Jannik as one of the greats of Italian sport."

What was your best moment? "I have to say that I was moved by a lot of points, especially the hard-fought ones. But I was confident; I knew she could do it."

What do you like about Jannik? “I don't have the technical knowledge to speak for myself. But he's an absolute champion in terms of his conduct on the pitch. His fairness always impresses me. He's the best.”

Is Sinner already an icon? “To me, he truly seems like a perfect sportsman. When he plays, he's exemplary. He never gets into arguments, he's never unfair to his opponents. I look at him from the outside and I see him growing as a person too. He's got it all now.”

Is his Wimbledon victory a feat? “In tennis history, without a doubt.”

What are the most important triumphs in Italian sport? "Well, I'd start with Jannik and his success last Sunday. Then Jacobs' gold in the 100 meters in Tokyo and the World Championships won by the Italian national football team in 1982 and 2006. Don't make me rank them; they're all great victories. In fact, I'd be sorry to forget anyone, especially among the protagonists of sports that are less in the spotlight."

Can Sinner also win Roland Garros and thus complete his Grand Slam tournament collection? “He's the best tennis player in the world, so of course, he can do this too. There are no limits.”
